It’s a fresh fact of our life here on the edge of the sea that we are always also in the midst of someplace else – a pine wood, a dirt lane, a rough clearing of meadowy reeds holding the nearby dock pond.
This past week was busy with winter prepping the outside and decorating the inside of our little cabin and even littler cottage. Sandy and Marcy got here ahead of me by a few days, and what a wonderful chunk of late summer light and air they enjoyed before I arrived with some graying skies and eventual rains later in the week.
The kayaks and Adirondack chairs are stowed beneath the house, the water heater and pipes have been drained from the 3-season cottage, the hammock is in and even our rain-rutted road has been freshly refilled with gravel. I hung some new lights and lost a couple of old ones while Sandy applied her magical gift of spreading art work across the rare space of our wooden walls. We three also stole sweet stillnesses of time to simply rest and breathe here amidst the gathering fall colors and vibe of St. George.
Friday we popped in to Rockland for errands, vaxxes and haircuts. In between stops I wandered down to the working pier and on the eerily calm edge of Rockland’s harbor, snapped this misty pic of the absolute stillness of sea and sky.
Amidst the Village bustle of a five-hour jam of music and fundraising for the fire last week in Port Clyde, we threaded our way past the overflow parking and found a spot to park the car on the edge of the Tenants Harbor pier and walked one of our favorite strolls, along Barter Point Rd, tracing the edge of the northern harbor towards Long Cove.
Friends dropped by and, after a short visit over sandwiches, wine, local ice cream and blueberry pie, we settled in for some TV calm. Marcy beat us to bed, but Sandy and I weren’t far behind.
Before we slipped into bed, Sandy and I stepped out into the crystal clear and cooling night to stand on our open deck and crane our heads back as far as they go to drink in the brilliant star-filled night sky. It continues to take our breath away looking up into such sparkling, boundless universes here amidst our expanding love on the edge of our little slice of endless sea.
